Palm Oil

Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is wastewater resulting from processing fresh fruit bunches (FFB) to crude palm oil (CPO) at the mill. POME decomposes organically and releases greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide. In a bioreactor, POME is used as raw material where bacteria anaerobically digest the POME to create biogas made up of methane and carbon dioxide, which is used to power the biogas plant.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an undesirable impurity in biogas that turns into sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) during the combustion process. It can damage the combustion engines, and the H2S content reduces the calorific value of biogas which in turn decreases the combustion efficiency. We monitor the full parameters for the qualitative aspect of the acceptance test by monitoring biogas composition via gas chromatography analysis for C1-C6+, H2S, CO2, CO, O2, moisture, and gross calorific value (GCV).
